CAN I
GET PREGNANT ?
Questions
and Answers

1.
Could I be pregnant if he inserted his penis into my vagina
an hour after he had
ejaculated?
Possibly. After he has an orgasm, sperm can
survive for some time inside the urethra, the tube that carries
semen out of the penis. If you want to have sex again, use
contraception because a man's body is always replenishing
semen. Every time he inserts his penis into your vagina,
there's a chance you could get pregnant, since semen is
released with every
ejaculation.
2.
Could I be pregnant if we had anal
intercourse?
No, as long
as he doesn't spill any ejaculate close to the vagina. However,
if you have this kind of sex, remember that he shouldn't insert
his penis into your vagina right afterward. This could lead not
only to pregnancy but also to a severe vaginal infection from
rectal bacteria. If you're going to switch to vaginal sex, have
him change condoms, or better yet, wash and then use a fresh
condom.
3.
Could I be pregnant if we had sex in a hot
tub?
Yes,
but only if he inserts his penis into your vagina and
ejaculates. If he ejaculates into the water, the sperm will
die.
4.
Could I be pregnant if he ejaculated in my mouth and I
swallowed it?
No.
5.
Could I be pregnant if we had sex standing
up?
Yes.
Gravity will make it harder for the sperm to reach the egg, but
pregnancy is still possible.
6.
Could I be pregnant if I had unprotected sex during my
menstrual period?
Yes,
because you could ovulate during your menstrual period and
because sperm can live in a woman's body for up to seven days.
If you ovulate (release an egg from an ovary) within seven days
after having sex -- which is possible, especially if your
monthly cycle is shorter than 28 days -- then you can get
pregnant.
7.Could
I be pregnant if he penetrated me but without
ejaculating?
Yes.
Every time he inserts his penis into your vagina, there is a
chance you could get pregnant. Before he ejaculates there is a
small amount of pre-ejaculate fluid with a high concentration
of sperm in it. It only takes one of those sperm to begin a
pregnancy. He'll also release some semen into your vagina even
before he's about to have an orgasm. So withdrawing before
orgasm doesn't work.
8.
Could I be pregnant if he ejaculated on my upper thigh or my
belly button?
No.
But make sure the ejaculate doesn't get close to your genitals.
Pregnancy happens when a sperm unites with an egg, which is
released from a woman's ovary about two weeks before her next
period is due to start. Sperm must get on your genitals and
into your vagina to have a chance of fertilizing an
egg.
9.
Could I be pregnant if he ejaculated in my mouth and I
swallowed it?
No.
10.
Could I be pregnant if we had anal
intercourse?
No,
as long as he doesn't spill any ejaculate close to the vagina.
However, if you have this kind of sex, remember that he
shouldn't insert his penis into your vagina right afterward.
This could lead not only to pregnancy but also to a severe
vaginal infection from rectal bacteria. If you're going to
switch to vaginal sex, have him change condoms, or better yet,
wash and then use a fresh
condom.
11.
Could I be pregnant if he inserted his penis into my
vagina an hour after he had
ejaculated?
Possibly.
After he has an orgasm, sperm can survive for some time inside
the urethra, the tube that carries semen out of the penis. If
you want to have sex again, use contraception because a man's
body is always replenishing semen. Every time he inserts his
penis into your vagina, there's a chance you could get
pregnant, since semen is released with every
ejaculation.
12.
Could I be pregnant if he ejaculated several times in one
night before we had sex?
Yes,
because even though his sperm count might be lower in his next
ejaculate, there is still a chance that there are viable sperm
in there.
13.
Could
I be pregnant if there was no penetration but there was
genital
contact?
Yes. Every
time he ejaculates near the vagina, there's a chance that sperm
will enter
14.
Could I be pregnant if he ejaculated on the outside of my
underwear?
Maybe. If
no moisture seeps through, you can't get pregnant. However,
underpants are porous and sperm can penetrate them. So if your
underpants are wet all the way through, sperm could enter your
vagina
15.
Could I be pregnant if I'm still a
virgin?
Yes. If
your partner ejaculates near your vagina, it's possible for
sperm to enter and make you pregnant. (Even if your hymen is
still intact, it's not a solid
barrier.)
16.
Could I be pregnant if we didn't have
orgasms?
Yes. A
woman can become pregnant without reaching orgasm and a man
releases sperm even before ejaculating, so pregnancy is
possible in either situation.
17.
Could I be pregnant if semen was on my hand and I touched my
genitals?
Yes. Sperm
can survive outside the body for a short time, less than half
an hour. Then they dry out and die. However, you can never be
sure so you still have to be careful. Washing your hands with
soap and water will kill any
sperm.
18.
Could I be pregnant if I've had lots of unprotected sex
before and have never gotten
pregnant?
Yes.
This doesn't mean that you're sterile. You could just be lucky
so far.
15.
Could I be pregnant if I got up right away and washed my
vagina using a bidet or by
douching?
Yes. In
fact, doing this might actually increase the chances of getting
pregnant because it pushes the sperm upward in the vagina,
toward their target. Also, sperm may already be there by the
time douching occurs.
16.
Could I be pregnant if I had sex with a tampon in
place?
Yes, because you
never know how much semen it will
absorb.
17.
Could I be pregnant if I carefully counted the days of my
menstrual cycle to predict
ovulation?
Yes, you
could become pregnant even if you're using this "rhythm
method." There is no 100 percent safe time in a cycle to have
unprotected sex. Ovulation occurs about 14 days before the next
menstrual period starts. A woman is potentially fertile for a
week before and maybe one or two days after
ovulation.
Even a woman with a very regular
cycle has a couple of cycles every year when ovulation time is
irregular. Since sperm can live inside you for six to seven
days after sex, one of these "surprise" ovulations could result
in a pregnancy.
18. Could I be pregnant even though I'm taking
the Pill?
Yes, but
the chances are very low -- less than 1
percent.

19.
Could I be pregnant if I forgot to take the Pill a couple of
weeks ago?
Yes. If you
miss taking a birth control pill for 24 hours or more, there is
a chance during the rest of that cycle that you could become
pregnant. Continue taking the pills that month, but use
additional contraception such as
condoms.
20.
Could I be pregnant if the condom
broke?
Yes.
The closer you are to your ovulation date, the more likely you
are to get pregnant if a condom
breaks.
21.
Could I be pregnant if the condom slipped off inside
me?
Yes.
22.
Could I be pregnant if we used an old
condom?
Yes. An old
condom is more likely than a new one to have tiny holes in it
or to break during sex because the latex may be breaking down.
You can hold a condom in front of a light to look for flaws
before use -- but if the condom is so old that you have to do
this, it's better to use a fresh one. Throw out condoms when
they reach the expiration date printed on the
package.
23.
Could I be pregnant if I only used contraceptive
gel?
Yes.
Contraceptive gel is not meant to be used by itself. It
requires additional contraceptives, such as a condom or
diaphragm, to be effective
24.
Could I be pregnant if I had my first Depo-Provera
contraceptive shot last week?
Yes. For a
month after the injection, you should use additional
contraception.
25.
Could I be pregnant if I have an
IUD?
Yes,
although the chance is less than 2 percent. An IUD pregnancy is
dangerous, so if you miss your period and especially if you
have pelvic pain, call your doctor
immediately.
26.
Could I be pregnant if he says he's
sterile?
Maybe. If
he tells you he's sterile because he never made anyone
pregnant, that doesn't mean he won't make you pregnant. Always
use contraception unless you're absolutely
certain.
27.
Could I be pregnant if he says he had a
vasectomy?
If he's
telling the truth about the vasectomy, then you can't get
pregnant. But you need to be 100 percent sure, and it's never
wrong to protect yourself until you know for
sure.
28.
Could I be pregnant if I waited three days before taking
"morning after" pills?
Maybe.
Emergency contraception -- "morning after" pills -- works up to
72 to 96 hours after you had sex. But the longer you wait, the
less effective this method will be at preventing pregnancy.
Take the pills as soon as possible after you have had
unprotected sex.
29. Could I be pregnant if I took a home
pregnancy test a week after unprotected sex and it was
negative?
Yes. At the
earliest, a home pregnancy test will become positive 10 to 12
days after you ovulate, but usually it takes 14 to 16 days.
That means that you might be pregnant even if you have a
negative test a week after having
sex.
The earliest that a home
pregnancy test will become positive is also about the same time
you know that your period is late. That is, the test will work
14 days after ovulation occurs. So don't try a test until after
you're sure your period is
late.
30.
Could I be pregnant if I took a home pregnancy test two
weeks after sex and it was
negative?
Unfortunately, a negative test might mean
that you did the test too early, or that you did it
incorrectly. If your period is overdue but your home test is
negative, wait another week and take another test to be sure
you aren't pregnant. If the new test is negative and your
period is at least two weeks overdue, then your period is late
for some other reason and you should see a
doctor.
31.
Could I be pregnant if I took a home pregnancy test and it
was positive?
Almost
certainly. A positive test is correct 99 percent of the time.
If you have any doubts, take a second test a week later, or go
see a doctor.
And, if you are pregnant, the
earlier you begin prenatal care or pursue a termination of the
pregnancy -- an abortion -- the
better.

32. My boyfriend/girlfriend says you can't
get pregnant the first
time.
WRONG.
You can. And lots
of girls do. And when they do, they find they've screwed
up their relationship with their parents and friends.
Then they find that it's difficult to get through school
and college exams and life is just not the fun it should
be when there's a baby to be looked after. If you don't
want a baby, then use a
condom.
33. I'll take it out before I
finish.
THAT DOESN'T WORK
EITHER!
While you're
doing it, the sperm that fertilises the ovum are often
released without you even knowing it. And guys often find
they've simply lost the will power to withdraw before
they finish. So don't take the risk, use a
condom.
34. My partner's never
been with anyone else before, so I can't catch
anything.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THEY'RE TELLING THE
TRUTH?
Some people are not responsible and may lie
to you about their past, in order to reassure you. The
only way to really protect you against STD's and HIV is
for the man to wear a condom. This will help protect both
the man and the woman, not only from HIV, the virus that
can lead to AIDS, but also syphilis, gonorrhoea and
herpes. Only a condom can help prevent the spread of
disease.
